Description
Popular images of the Amish and even many scholarly works, have often presented homogenized versions of Old Order life and culture. Yet during the past decade a remarkable array of new studies have enriched Amish scholarship and suggested variety as an unmistakable feature of Amish experience. This essay surveys the major contours of that variety, identifying key factors that combine to produce growing cultural diversity. The essay also explores three centripetal developments of recent decades that have shaped new sorts of common Amish experiences. Given the growing diversity and new identities at play in an increasing number of contexts across North America, however, what sense does it make to speak of "the Amish"? The essay presents a new model for thinking about Amish cultural cohesion, and argues for conceiving of Amish community as a conversation--metaphorically and sometimes literally--with the past, with the world and among themselves. **********
